Travel: Subic Bay

Located around 90km North West of Manila, Subic Bay can be reached from 2 International Airports. By far the easiest is Clark International Airport, followed by Manila International Airport.

The bay was previously home to the largest United States Naval facility outside of the US, this former base now makes up the SBMA Freeport Zone. Surrounding the bay is Olongapo City, Barrio Barretto, Subic town, the former Hanjin shipyard area and the SBMA Freeport Zone.

Subic Bay from Manila NAIA International Airport by Car

Depending on the time of day and traffic conditions, the use of Apps Waze or Google Maps is advised to help beat the traffic to get to the entrance of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX).

Once on the NLEX continue North and take the exit for the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). Follow the SCTEX until the end, note the NLEX and SCTEX are toll roads, the fee from Manila to Tipo (the last / Subic exit of the SCTEX) for a regular sized car is approximately PHP 500.

Continue on to Rizal Highway and through the SBMA Freeport Zone. At the Ayala Harbourpoint Mall crossroads, take a left on to Manila Avenue. Turn right at the next crossroads on to Canal Road and proceed to Kalaklan Gate to exit the freeport zone.

Once over the bridge, turn left and proceed along the coastal road approximately 4km, reaching Barretto.

Subic Bay from Manila NAIA International Airport by Bus

There are several options for bus transport from Manila NAIA airport. There are two Manila Victory Liner Bus Terminals that serve Olongapo City, they are Pasay and Cubao terminals. To get from NAIA to the bus terminal, try for a shuttle bus service. Taxis should be avoided if possible, however if unavoidable, Pasay is the nearest bus terminal to the Airport.

Buses from Pasay and Cubao leave between every 30 and 60 minutes. Victory Liner buses to Olongapo City from Pasay or Cubao terminals cost around PHP 300. Be sure to get the service via Dau / SCTEX as this will save you an hour or so travel time. The duration to Olongapo City can vary wildly, from 2.5 hrs to 5hrs depending on traffic.

Another alternative is to take the P2P (point to point) airport bus service to Clark International Airport, then another bus from CIA to Olongapo City. Both these services are clean and reliable however total journey time may be more depending on departure times. The NAIA to Clark bus is around PHP 430 and from Clark to Olongapo it is around PHP 250.

Once in Olongapo City, to get to Barretto you have three choices. The ride is between 15 and 20minutes. A jeepney will cost around PHP 20 plus additional if you have bulky luggage. A tricycle costs around PHP 150 and a taxi around PHP 350. Once off the bus there will be plenty of drivers available and offering their services, the blue jeepney terminal is a short walk around the corner of the bus depot.

Subic Bay from Manila NAIA International Airport by Taxi / Private Transfer

By far the easiest method of transport is to get a private car / driver to bring you from the airport. I would avoid taxis from Manila airport and having a pre-booked driver takes away any potential argument about overcharging etc.

Please get in touch for up to date details of drivers who are regularly used. All have modern, clean cars and are reliable and trustworthy. Costs for a Manila NAIA to Barretto transfer range from around PHP 4200 to 5000 all in. The driver meets you in the Arrivals area and takes you from there.

Subic Bay from Clark International Airport by Car

Follow signs for the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) to leave the Clark Freeport Zone. Join the SCTEX bound for Subic Bay and follow until the end, note the SCTEX is a toll road, the fee from Clark to Tipo (the last / Subic exit of the SCTEX) for a regular sized car is approximately PHP 220.

Subic Bay from Clark International Airport by Bus

Exit the Arrivals area and head to the bus line. Find the Victory Liner service to Olongapo City. The fare is around PHP 250. The bus is air-conditioned and is not usually busy.

Subic Bay from Clark International Airport by Taxi / Private Transfer

Similar to NAIA I would tend to avoid the taxis outside Clark International Airport. From experience, despite there being a fare board it is usually ignored. The easiest way is to have a private car and driver pre-booked.

Please get in touch for up to date details of drivers who are regularly used. All have modern, clean cars and are reliable and trustworthy. Costs for a Clark International Airport to Barretto transfer range from around PHP 3000 all in. The driver meets you in the Arrivals area and takes you from there.

Accommodation Options

I would recommend staying within the Barrio Barretto area for simplicity in getting to and from class. Traffic can sometimes be heavy along the national highway and being within short walking distance or tricycle ride of training will be a welcomed benefit.

There is a wide range of accommodation available here, from budget to higher end modern beach front resorts. A variety of restaurants, bars and 2 beaches are within walking distance / short tricycle ride. Get in touch for the latest list of recommended hotels and resorts.
